A beautiful historical town located a little over 20 miles west of Newark, Morristown, NJ, is not only an excellent spot to visit but also a great base to explore the many nearby nature reserves and public recreation areas of the region. With extensive nature trails, excellent facilities, and sprawling swathes of undisturbed nature, here are three of the most beautiful state parks you should check out while exploring the area in your new 2023 Ford Escape Active.
1. Washington Rock State Park
Featuring a well-known scenic outlook that was used by George Washington to monitor British troops during the Revolutionary War, Washington Rock State Park is the perfect destination if you are looking for a place where you can enjoy nature and learn about some of the most significant historical events that took place in this region. This state park opened its doors to the public in 1932 and covers a little over 50 acres.
Besides the famous outlook, Washington Rock State Park boasts plenty of walking trails and picnic areas, making it a popular destination among residents of Morristown and other nearby towns. Located just over 15 miles south of the city center, this state park can be reached in approximately half an hour via James Street.
2. Hopatcong State Park
If you are searching for a nearby destination where you can spend the entire day enjoying your favorite water sports and relaxing with your friends and family, Hopatcong State Park is the place to be. Established in the early 1920s and encompassing an area of a little over 160 acres, this place provides public access to Lake Hopatcong and Lake Musconetcong.
Hopatcong State Park is located just 25 miles northwest of downtown Morristown and can be reached in less than half an hour via route I-80. Swimming is allowed between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when lifeguards are on duty. Other activities visitors can enjoy here include fishing, boating, canoeing, picnicking, grilling, and hiking. The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum is located within the park and is a great place to learn about the history of the lake.
3. Ringwood State Park
Located right by the New York state line and about 30 miles northeast of Morristown, Ringwood State Park is another excellent destination for a day trip. Created in the mid-1960s, this beautiful state park offers public access to Shepherd Lake, where visitors can swim, boat, or cast their lines during the spring and summer months. Driving here from downtown Morristown takes about 35 minutes via route I-287.
